Aim and scope of the periodical

The yearly deals with widely understood matters of functioning of Communist parties in Poland, Soviet Union and Soviet Bloc countries.

The yearly „Komunizm: System – Ludzie Dokumentacja” intends to meet the academic initiatives seeking to deepen the research on the Communist system in Poland and in Central Europe, its aggregation and attempts to coordinate the researchers’ efforts. The yearly is meant as a plane of views exchange, an interdisciplinary forum, and an organiser of academic events (e.g. conferences) which would contribute to better understanding of functioning of the Communist parties and its satellites in the 20th c. occurrences. The principal role of the yearly – in the perspective of the editorial board and its associates – is the comparative research, especially throughout explanation of Communist parties functioning as power institutions, and initiating the research on the less examined matters of i.a. Communist parties international cooperation, mutual relations between parties, similarities and differences in party oversight of public administration, economic sphere and cultural life.

Periodical’s history

First issue of the periodical was released in 2012 as „independent academic periodical online” […] „concerning the history of Communism only”. The periodical from the very beginning was issued in the electronic format online on the webpage komunizm.net.pl, currently it is also published on the Institute of National Remembrance academic periodicals platform czasopisma.ipn.gov.pl.

The publisher of the periodical from 2012 up to 2016 was the Unit for the research on the Communist party of the Towarzystwo Nauki i Kultury “Libra” („Libra” Association for Research and Culture), from 2017 to 2022 the periodical was co-published by „Libra” Association and Institute of National Remembrance Branch in Lublin, from 2023 it is co-published by „Libra” Association and Institute of National Remembrance Publishing House in Warsaw.

The first editor-in-chief of „Komunizm” was Mirosław Szumiło, the editorial board consisted of Marcin Żukowski (editorial board’s secretary), Dariusz Magier (thematic editor), Rafał Jarosz, Grzegorz Gałęzowski (graphic editor), Monika Mackiewicz (language editor). In 2016 Robert Majdański (administrator of the komunizm.net.pl portal) and Sylwia Szyc (editorial board’s second secretary) joined the editorial board. From 2017 to 2022 Marcin Kruszyński was the editor-in-chief, in 2017 Jacek W. Wołoszyn joined the editorial board as thematic editor. In 2018 Paweł Libera and Martyna Grądzka-Rejak (editorial board’s secretary) joined the editorial board, Marcin Żukowski, Rafał Jarosz, Grzegorz Gałęzowski, and Robert Majdański withdrew from the editorial team. In 2019 Michał Przeperski and Daniel Wicenty joined the editorial board as thematic editors. In 2020 Tomasz Osiński joined the editorial board as thematic editor. In 2021 Martyna-Grądzka-Rejak was thematic editor. In 2022 Jakub Hapka and Konrad Majchrzyk joined the editorial board.

Since 2023 the editor-in-chief of the periodical is Adam Dziuba, appointed with the new editorial board consisting of Paweł Libera (deputy editor-in-chief), Sylwia Szyc and Damian Sitkiewicz (editorial board’s secretaries), Przemysław Gasztold, Rafał Łatka, Dariusz Magier, Marcin Markiewicz, Karol Sacewicz, Bogusław Tracz, Jakub Hapka (language editor), Konrad Majchrzyk (digitisation editor). Andrzej Boboli was the thematic editor for the 2023 issue.

The Academic Board of the periodical in 2012 consisted of Marek J. Chodakiewicz, Andrzej Chojnowski, Antoni Dudek, Jerzy Eisler, Mirosław Golon, Bogdan Musiał, Andrzej Paczkowski and Wojciech Roszkowski. In 2017 Volodymyr Baran, Stephen Wheatcroft, Sorin Radu, John Connelly and Mirosław Szumiło joined the Academic Board. In 2018 Isabelle Davion joined the Academic Board, and Marek J. Chodakiewicz and Bogdan Musiał withdrew from the Board. In 2020 Dariusz Bogusz and Włodzimierz Suleja joined the Academic Board.

Archiving Policy

The electronic versions of papers published are stored in the repository on this webpage, and in the journal's profile in the Library of Science repository, the PDF files are passed to National Library of Poland as electronic obligatory copies, the printed copies of the journal are obligatory passed to the National Library of Poland and other libraries entitled to obtain obligatory copies of prints as required by the Act of 7 November 1996 r. on obligatory library copies and the Ordinance of the Minister of Culture and Arts of 6 March 1997.
